Fairytale Toadstool Painting Workshop at The Horniman Museum and Gardens - 28th of June 2026

Fairytale Toadstool Painting Workshop at The Horniman Museum and Gardens - 28th of June 2026
During this beginner-friendly acrylic painting workshop we will be painting the most famous member of the mushroom world: A red Toadstool also known as Fly Agaric. With its cheerful red hat and white spots it makes an eye-catching mushroom motif that many of us recognise from different children’s book illustrations. At the beginning of the workshop you will receive the mushroom motif pre-sketched in pencil on an A4 grey board, which we will fill with bold acrylic paints. Under step-by-step guidance you will mix the right colours and use the correct paint brushes to create a beautiful ready-to-frame mushroom illustration. As the final step we will be adding some small leaves, grass, mossy patches and a fly surrounding the mushroom.

This illustration workshop is for mushroom and woodland lovers who would love to try their hand at painting. It is absolutely beginner-friendly so you do not need any prior experience with illustration or acrylic paints. The mushroom motif will be pre-sketched for you so do not worry about getting the proportions right. The toadstool painting workshop is suitable for both adults and children from age 10. Please note that acrylic paint can stain your clothes, so bear this in mind when attending the workshop. There will be a total of about eight attendants. The toadstool painting workshop will take place on Sunday the 28th of June 2026 from 12:30-1:10 PM just outside The Pavilion on the grounds of the Horniman Museum and Gardens, SE23 3PQ.
Your workshop will be hosted by Anna-Maria Pellegrini, a London-based nature illustrator and textile designer who can not wait to share some of her mushroom inspired acrylic painting knowledge and skills with you. With her ten years of experience in artistic botanical and entomological illustration you are in safe hands and can feel confident that your finished toadstool illustration will look beautiful. We will start the workshop on time so please arrive a couple of minutes before to get settled.
